The replacement for Ferrari's decade-old 456GT four seat Grand Tourer looks increasingly likely to be pushed back to a world premiere at next January's Detroit Motor Show, emphasising the significance of the North American market to the sportscar manufacturer. However the launch will be scheduled so as not to clash with the Maserati Quattroporte which should be ready toward the end of the year.

Designed by Pininfarina and to be fitted with a 550-560bhp version of the Enzo's 6.0-litre V12 offering 650Nm of torque, it is expected to be called the 599/600, a number derived from the cubic capacity ( the 456GT had a capacity of 456,166m³ ) with the addition of a relevant regional name, most probably 'Bologna', but Emilia, Fiorano, Monza or Imola are also possiblities.

The 499/500 will be built in aluminium using similar techniques to the 360 Modena, allowing an expected 300 lb weight saving on the steel-constructed 456GT. Wheels increase to 18-in while the F1-style semi-automatic gearbox will be available. Ferrari's recent signed technical collaboration contract with Audi is expected to yield a 4x4 version of the 499/500, although speculation continues as to whether it will be available on launch or further down the line.
